Modern Baker is tucked away in Summertown, a ten minute bus ride from Oxford’s bustling city center. I’ve lived and worked within walking distance of this delightful bakery for many years but had never actually visited. But at long last, intrigued by their promise of a ‘revolution in healthy baking‘ and a droolworthy Instagram account, I decided to pay it a visit.
It is a local, independently-run business, and is built around providing healthy food that is delicious at the same time.
I might be a little biased here, but Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. It’s got lovely parks, amazing architecture, plenty of great restaurants and thanks to the new Westgate Shopping Centre, lots of shopping, too. But the side effect to all of this is that it gets absolutely packed during the summer months. The city centre on a sunny day is basically a sea of people, which can be difficult if you’re trying to find somewhere to eat! This where Modern Baker comes in.
As I said earlier, it’s only ten minutes on the bus from the centre, and there are plenty of routes to choose from. The area that it’s in, Summertown, also has some really nice independent shops and cafes, so you’ll be getting to see a little corner of Oxford that is off the old and beaten tourist track.
Before we get to the food (and there’s a lot of it!), I just want to mention the cafe itself because the decor is a dream. The space is bright and colourful, and the branding – a fresh mint green – suits it perfectly. It is so refreshing to see a tasteful, beautifully decorated cafe in a sea of Costas and Starbucks.
There isn’t a whole lot of seating (a total of 12 seats), but it was very quiet when went on a Saturday afternoon so I don’t think you’ll struggle. Cushions, plants and bold accents make this cafe a delight to photograph, so you’ll definitely get your fill of Instragram fodder here.
I enjoy the occasional sweet treat, but I am always trying to cut down on the amount of refined sugar I consume. So you can imagine my delight when I was faced with a selection of cakes and pastries all made with natural alternatives in the form of coconut sugar, honey, dates and maple syrup! At the counter, there was a whole array of choices, and I was told that there were even more chilled desserts in their fridge.
I decided to go for a raw salted tart, while Darius chose a blueberry cheesecake. My tart was light and creamy but not too sweet. And the fact that it was chilled made it surprisingly refreshing on such a hot day. I usually struggle to finish a whole portion of dessert but didn’t this time. I think it was something to do with how, for lack of a better word, wholesome it felt!
It didn’t feel like I was eating dessert but it tasted just as good. Amazing.
They’ve also got a range of hot and chilled drinks, and bottled sodas, juices, smoothies, and other healthy drinks.
In addition to buying food and drink to eat at the cafe, Modern Baker also sells healthy organic products. They’ve got a whole bunch of different kinds of breads, snack butters, teas and a lot more. I’m a sucker for anything sourdough, so I’m definitely going to be going back to get a loaf or two. It goes without saying that everything looked and smelled delicious.
Whether you’re someone who wants to indulge their sweet tooth in a healthy way, enjoys discovering local independent cafes, or just wants a break from all the hustle and bustle, Modern Baker will have something in store for you. Just prepare to be very indecisive as there are a LOT of delectable options. Or, you know, don’t just order one thing. I won’t tell. 😉
I hope you enjoyed reading this. Have you ever visited Modern Baker or do you have anything similar where you live? I’d love to know!
