It’s the holiday season, and along with it come holiday parties. Maybe you’re thinking of doing a red lip, but which red? Deep or bright? Glossy or matt? Warm or cool? Sometimes too much choice is almost a problem. Almost.
I’ve gone through my lipstick collection to find my three favourite reds for this time of year. Two are from Revlon and one is a Chanel lipstick. I haven’t heard them being spoken about much online so I thought I would take this opportunity to show them some love! There’s also an Illamasqua wildcard in there to mix things up (and if red isn’t your thing).
I’ve taken all these photos with no other makeup on (except cc cream), because I didn’t want anything to distract from the lipstick. I also haven’t colour corrected the photos in any way so you get a true representation of the shade, and haven’t used any lipliner.
I’m starting with my favourite because why not? This is Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in 84 Dialogue
It’s my most reached for lipstick for parties and evenings out. It’s a beautiful, cool toned red that glides on like a dream and stays on for a long, long time. It’s got a slight hint of pink to it which isn’t apparent when you look at it in the tube, but this makes it incredibly flattering.
It’s also pretty glossy, but not sticky, so you don’t have to worry about your hair getting stuck to it!
All in all, it’s a universal red that is definitely worth a try if you find yourself next to a Chanel counter.
You can buy it on the Debenhams website.
The second lipstick in this list is the Revlon Colorburst lacquer balm in 150 Enticing. As you can see, it’s a much deeper, warmer red. And because it’s a balm stick, it’s much easier to apply as well. It’s very, very glossy and if you apply too much, a word of warning – things do get sticky (ew).
Having said that though, the colour is gorgeous and is perfect for the winter months. And because it’s Revlon, it’s purse friendly too!
Buy it on the Boots website here.
This lipstick is a fairly recent acquisition – I got it on Day 1 of my Lookfantastic Advent Calendar! It’s the Illamasqua Lava Lips in Vixen. It’s a marbled lipstick, so it offers you a slightly different shade every time you put it on. It’s not the most hydrating lip so I would suggest putting a lip balm underneath, but it’s a lovely colour. One coat and you get a finish like the one in the photo, but a couple of coats and it changes the look entirely. It’s a good option if you want a little something extra but don’t want to go all out with red.
It’s currently sold out on the Illamasqua website which isn’t helpful, but you might have better luck at a makeup counter. It’s definitely worth a try!
Last, but definitely not the least, is perhaps my most worn red lipstick – Revlon’s Colorburst balm stain in Romantic. Hand to heart, this is the easiest red you can wear.
It’s definitely warm toned and bright, but still so wearable. It works for both day and night, and again, because it’s in a chubby stick, it’s quick and easy to put on. You don’t even need a mirror.
I wear this to work all the time. And unlike some reds which can wash you out and make you feel like you need to wear more makeup to balance them out, this one works great just on its own. Honestly, if you were ever to buy one red lipstick to wear every day, make it this one.
